How Much Content Should be in your Email Newsletter?
An email newsletter should have between 5-8 pieces of content in it.
The reason for the minimum of five is to give the subscriber enough content that it makes it worth opening, if there isn’t enough content the subscriber will find something better to do than read your emails.
The reason for the maximum is way more interesting. Have you ever gone to a restaurant and been given a chef’s special or lunch menu? Notice how most of those menus have so few items in comparison to the pages and pages of the normal menu?
The idea here is from the “Paradox of Choice,” a book explaining why sometimes having too many choices makes it impossible to choose. Having so many options makes it hard for someone to decide what they want, and they may decide they want nothing at all.
Having more than eight pieces of content in your email will most likely confuse your readers, and as opposed to getting them to read your content you have just convinced them to leave and find something better to do.
“Sometimes giving your subscribers too much choice is forcing them to choose to leave.”
