I have had many conversions with people about email marketing and their first question is “but no one likes getting spam mail, why should I send it?”
The answer is that this is 100% true! If you treat your email list as spam, then so will your subscribers and none of them will want to read it. But, if you get your subscribers the honest way and you give them what they asked for, no more and no less, then they will enjoy getting an email from you.
What is the honest way? There are a few ways to get emails the honest way:
1) Ask people to sign up for your mailing list like this: “Hey people, I am planning to start an newsletter, when it starts it will have fantastic content and you will learn a ton from it! To subscribe click here!”
2) Give people an incentive to subscribe, like this: “Hey awesomely cool folks! I made this awesome eBook about how to build your brand on social media, I think you’ll love it! Click here!” (this doesn’t exist… yet!) then send them to a landing page explaining the eBook and ask for their full name and email address in return for the eBook.
3) Give them a coupon or have a raffle: “As crazy as this sounds my amazingly low prices are going to be even lower for a very short time, sign up to my email list and get 10% off my awesome product for the next 10 days.*”
4) Create a poll and require people to submit their email (informing them that they will be added to your email list) in order to vote: “Dudes and dudettes! What do you love more Twitter or Facebook?” Then require an email to vote.
Here are not honest ways of getting people to sign up for your email list:
1) Trick them: “Hey person, give me your email and I’ll give you candy.”
2) Buy them: “Hey company, I’ll buy your emails off you then spam the heck out of all of the subscribers!”
If you build a list honestly then the subscribers will be happy to receive your email, if you don’t well everyone will be wasting their time…
