Now that we are done talking about plugins it is time to start learning about how to use WordPress on a day to day basis. Before we delve into Posts let’s first consider what the difference between Posts and Pages.
Pages are the landing pages that are evergreen for your website. Examples of this are the Home Page, the About Us, Services, Contact Us, Blog Page, any landing pages for email sign ups, FAQs, etc.
Posts on the other hand are usually what we would call blog posts. If you are writing an article, blog, posting a video, or a image slider this would fit better on a post.
Now, hover over Posts in the sidebar and select “All Posts.” On the top you will notice the “Add New” button and below you will see all of the existing posts (which is probably none, since you haven’t started creating yet.) In this list of all Posts you will see the title of the post, the Author (we will discuss how to create additional authors later), the Category, the Tags of the Post, the Date it was published, the SEO ranking (Red, Yellow, and Green) which Sidebar is being used, and which footer is being used for that post.
Of course all of this is totally customizable, simply click the “Screen Options” on the top right, and you can choose which things you want to see, and which you don’t want to see in this menu.
Before we create our first post let’s look at categories and tags.
In the categories section (In Posts on the sidebar simply click Categories) you will see all of the categories for the site. A good way to explain categories are like folders on your computer. However you want to organize your folders you can, and it will help your readers find other articles on the same topic by looking at a specific category.
In this tab you will see the name of all of the categories, the description (which is usually not shown to readers), the slug (which simply means the words that it will create a URL for. So if you name the category “big fish” then the slug by default will be “big-fish” and the link to the category page will be YOURURL/big-fish, and the Count (which is the total number of posts in that category.
You can choose to create your categories here or you can create them directly in the new post, which we will talk about tomorrow.
The last thing I want to discuss today is the tag (On the sidebar under Posts select Tags). The tags are the topics covered in the post, so if your readers want to read about a specific topic, they simply click on the tag, usually located at the end of the article, and they can read more posts on this topic. On the tags page you will see a very similar type of list to categories. You will see the Name of the tag, the description, the slug (the URL to see all of the posts tagged with that specific tags), and the count of articles tagged with that tag.
