Final Thoughts on Email Marketing

The next step in setting up your email is choosing your template. I am not going to tell you that there is one right template to choose, since every newsletter should feel special based on the company sending it. I like to choose the first one called “1 column” it is simple to work with and it let’s you customize later.
Mailchimp has some premade Themes, so it may be worth having a look through those to see if any of them pop out.
Just a few things to note when choosing a template:
- Mailchimp by default only let’s you have a 600 pixels width for your email. The reason for this is that any wider and it may be too large for mobile screens, so to prevent any issues they won’t let you design something wider.Keep this in mind when considering a template with 3 columns because it means that each column needs to be under 200 pixels, which is pretty small, and it will make text annoying to read at that size.
- No one reads sidebars. If no one clicks on the sidebar on your website they probably won’t click on the sidebar of your email. Of course, if for some reason there is information that you need to include in your email, but you don’t care if anyone actually sees it then the sidebar is a great place to do that (for example, a non-profit with a donor list. The list needs to be there, but no one actually wants to read it.)If you want the style of the email to match your site and your site has a very distinct sidebar, then you may want to consider putting a matching sidebar in your emails.Other than these 2 reasons I don’t see any reason to include a sidebar in an email.
- The drag and drop options in the design section allow you to create 2 column fields so there is no real need to create the need to have 2 columns in the template section, it only limits you later.
For these reasons I recognized long ago that the best template for most companies is the “1 column.” After you have selected this template you can customize everything you want in the design section.
