The most important thing about an email is the subject line. If your subscriber doesn’t care about the subject line they most lost likely won’t open your email, so no matter how great the content, they will never see it.
What makes a good subject line? Great question, that it is totally dependent on your audience. I have seen reports and surveys with data showing what types of words, number of characters, use of emojis, or the person’s first name (which I will forever find super creepy), and tons of other data.
I’ll tell that all of that if probably totally useless to you, because no two audiences are the same.
It is worth it to spend a month testing different types of subject lines to see which ones lead to the highest open rate. What should you test? Here are a few ideas:
- Try asking questions
- Test the length of the subject line
- Try emojis
- Try capitalizing words
- Try sentences ending in “…”
- Try including the date
- Try including a list
- Pique people’s interests
- Try including the subscriber’s name
- Ask your audience what they want
- Go crazy
- Be yourself
How often do you test your email subject lines?
