The True Power of Twitter – Marketing Essentials
Today we are going to finish the set up for the Yoast SEO plugin. The next section that you want to fill out is the social tab. On the Accounts page put in the links to any and all social media accounts that you have that are associated with your business.
Next, go to the Facebook tab. On this page you are setting two things. The first is what Facebook will show by default if the home page is shared. The first box is for the image that should be displayed, next is the name of the page, and finally the description that will show by default.
In the next section choose the image that should show by default if there is no other image for any page that is shared on Facebook.
Finally, in the last section you can set up your Facebook Insights to connect with your website. Scroll to the bottom of Facebook Insights and add your domain, make sure to copy the number in the content section and paste it in to the Facebook App ID on your site.
On the twitter tab I would check mark the box and set the default card type to Summary with large image. This allows Twitter to have the best possible version of the picture for Twitter cards (which is now set to default for all links shared).
In the Pinterest section it allows you to sync Pinterest Analytics with your site. Instead of having to copy a long code into your header simply follow these instructions and copy the verification code into your site. Finally, for Google Plus, copy paste your about Google plus business page into the box and make sure the checkbox is checked.
The next section you need to set up is the Sitemaps. These files are how webmaster tools like Google and Bing can read your site, and find all of the content very easily.
We will skip General and go back to that in a moment. First, go to User Sitemap and make sure the box is checked. Unless you are running a site with lots of authors there is no need to tell sitemaps to crawl (english: look at) your author pages. Next, in post types choose the things you do NOT want the sitemap to look at. You may want sitemaps to look at all the information on your site, so leave everything unchecked, or you may want to hide certain things, so check mark those and save changes.
In the excluded posts include the URL of the posts you specifically don’t want the sitemap to list, like deleted posts, or posts that you have behind a paywall. In the last section check mark anything you want the sitemap to ignore, whether that is all categories, tags, etc.
Now that you have configured your sitemap the way you want it, go back to General and click the grey button that says “XML Sitemaps.” Here is the list of the sitemaps you have for the site. Now you want to copy these links and post them in your webmaster tools as the links to the sitemaps so that search engines know where to look.
After this very enthralling set up the Yoast SEO plugin is ready for use, but the fun is just beginning! We will explain in a later tip how to actually use the tool on your posts and pages.
(NOTE: There are still two others sections for the plugin. In Search Console you will see a list of all pages that had issues connecting with the sitemap. It will show the date that they were crawled and the issue that occured. In Tools, you can make bulk changes to your posts and pages without having to go manually into each page. In File editor you can create a robots file which allows you to manually select files or file types for the search engines to ignore, and allows you to edit your .htaccess file (which you shouldn’t do unless you know what you are doing.) And lastly, you can import and export settings so that you can easily duplicate the settings from other sites.)
