The next section of the Settings tab is the Reading Settings. This is a really important tab, it tells WordPress which page you want to be your home page and your blog page. By default WordPress creates a page with the last 10 posts on it. You can create a Home Page in the page tab (it doesn’t have to actually be called home, in fact for SEO reasons it probably shouldn’t be called Home…). After it is designed, simply go into the Reading section, change the “Front page displays” from “Your latest posts” to “A static page” and in “Front Page” choose the page you want to be your home page from the drop down menu. Then, create a blank page, call it “Blogs” or something like that and leave it blank, then select that page from the dropdown for “Post page.”
Now, you need to choose your settings from this Post page. In the section called “Blog pages shown at most” you select the number of articles that will show on your blog page, on your category pages, and on your tag pages. Then, WordPress will automatically create pages each listing that number of articles on each page.
The next box allows you to choose the number of articles that RSS feeds will find at a time per category, tag, etc.
Now, you need to decide if the Blog page will grab all of the content from each post or a summary. If your posts aren’t too long or don’t have videos or images, then it may be okay to show full posts on the blog page, but most of the time you just want people to read the summary, and then go into the post itself to read it. (For a good example of someone who shows the full post on his blog see Seth Godin’s blog since he never has images or videos, this is the perfect layout for his blog page.)
Finally, if for some crazy reason you don’t want search engines to find your site then check mark that option. But, if the whole point of having a site is for people to find your business that would be something very silly to check…
In the next section we will look at the Media Settings. Here you decide what size pictures will be displayed by default on your posts and pages.
When placing any media into a page or post you click on the “Add Media button,” select the image you want, then you have some options on the right side like, alt text (how search engines read images or text that will show instead of images to those with slow internet connections), caption, description, URL (I and size (thumbnail, medium, large, full size). This settings page decides what thumbnail, medium, and large actually mean on your pages. So choose the sizes in the Media settings, and it will affect every image you put on your site in the future.
