Twitter has changed a lot and the way that a company needs to be marketing has also changed. Before we get into Twitter I just want to discuss some background about Twitter. Twitter has 320 million active users, with 100 million of them being active on a daily basis. There are several problems with Twitter, most of them are due to Twitter’s open API. The fact that Twitter’s API is open means that many companies have set up automatic tweeting, messaging, following, etc. While businesses love that they can do things the easy way, it has led to tons of spam on the platform. This is a huge problem and is seriously harming the platform. Marketers killed Twitter.
That being said, the more real you can be on the platform (and any platform), and the less you automate, the more value you can get from the platform. What’s important is to find the balance between automation and live interaction to give you the edge you need to get your business to explode on the platform.
The first step you need to do is to create your account. When choosing your handle (Twitter account name) remember that a tweet has a maximum (for now, there are rumors that Twitter will raise that limit to 10k) of 140 characters. Twitter only let’s you choose a handle that is 20 characters long, but keep in mind that the length of your handle is part of that 140, so try to keep it as short as you can, while still having a recognizable name.
After you have chosen your handle you have to fill out your name, bio, location, website, (and birthday, if you are a person and not a company), and choose your profile image and header photo. Anytime a handle is missing an element it makes them look less authentic, so fill out as much as you can.
