I am sad to say that I do not use this tip at all… Twitter has a highly underrated feature called lists. They are a great way to organize your favorite twitter accounts. This is a great tool to track what your competition is tweeting about, and you will never miss a tweet of theirs again, because they are all in one place.
The biggest issue I have with Twitter is that the home feed is so overcrowded. There is just no way to keep up with everyone you follow. But, if you set up lists, and use them the right way, then it is possible to have several feeds and they are all manageable.
Firstly, you need to know that there are two types of lists, private and public. If you are making a list that you want others to take advantage of the list, then make it public, but if the list is for your eyes only or is a list of potential customers then you don’t want others (or the person) that someone is on that list, so make sure that it’s marked private!
So, how would you use lists? You would create one list called influencers (as discussed in earlier) and you would add all of the biggest companies that are pushing out content in my genre. So if I was a shoe store I would have Nike, Reebok, New Balance, Under Armour, etc. in one list so that I could keep track of all of them in one place.
Then, I would create another list called consumers where I would have a list of all of of the accounts that have interacted with me or several other influencers on a normal basis.
Then, I would create a third list called competition where I would include every store big or small that I would consider my competitors and would track everything they post like a hawk, making sure I understand every move they make.
To create a list go to Twitter Lists, on the right press “Create New List” (choose if it will be public or private), then to add people to the list search their account and click on settings next to the follow button on their page and choose “Add or remove from lists…”
Of course, you aren’t limited to three lists, you can make as many lists as you want, but this is a great start. Again, for obvious reasons you should mark the lists as private so that people you are adding don’t see you moving them into a list called “Potential Customers.”
Since Twitter got rid of the “Discover” section months ago this may be the best way to have a trimmed down list that can substitute your newsfeed. If you have a list of 10-20 handles that you want to follow and see every post simply make a list.
How do you or would you use Twitter Lists?
