Auto-DM’s (direct messages) are a great way for people to know that you are really creepy, you give them no value as a follower, and your tweets are probably automated or really stupid.
I’m actually not really sure why anyone uses DMs and I have yet to find a good use for DMs except maybe if you have a real friend who you want to talk to (then just use facebook chat, WhatsApp, or SMS).
When I first started twitter I would manually write “Hi (their name) thanks for the follow tell me about yourself.” Out of 100 people 3 answered me. You know why? Because no one likes getting DMs.
So do everyone a favor, don’t ask to like your facebook Page, or retweet your video, or comment on your LinkedIn article. Just don’t do it. Thanks.
UPDATE: Since writing this DMs have not really gotten more helpful for your business, but I have found one good use for them. If you have something that someone asks for, but you don’t want to share it with the world, be it, an article, a coupon code, etc. you can respond to a tweet saying that you will DM them.
I have seen companies who claim that although everyone claims that DM is a waste of time they have seen great results from it. So, don’t take my word for it, try it.
We already spoke about Crowdfire in a previous tip. You can log into Crowdfire, click automate, and set up an Auto DM. Make sure to track if people are replying or clicking or possibly unfollowing you, because of your auto-DMs. You never know, auto-DMing may be perfect for your industry, and you are losing out big time from not doing it, so give it a try.
