After you have set up an account you need to get followers. But how do you get followers? The question you need to ask yourself is “why do I want followers?” Do you want to have 1 million followers just to show off or do you actually want to sell your products?
Some would say that have a million followers fulfills both goals, but does it really help? Let’s say you are a shoe store in LA, does having a million Egyptian followers really help you? I doubt it.
So how do you find the right group of people? Go to Twitter search and search the topic of your business in the location that you are in. This search will give you a list of accounts who have recently been talking about your business’s space, so they are the perfect candidates for followers. But how do you get them to follow you?
Every tweet allows you to do several things:
- Like
- Retweet
- Reply
- Follow the Account who Tweeted
ONE THING YOU SHOULD NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER DO IS REPLY TO EVERY TWEET “hey buy my shoes!” No one likes that, and trust me, no one will buy your shoes. But if someone just bought a new pair of shoes then to favorite the tweet or reply “sweet kicks” is the right way to go. This puts you in the natural conversation. Putting yourself into the conversation as a robot is annoying, but coming into the conversation as a helpful, supportive, and friendly voice is not just acceptable it is desired.
And who knows, maybe in a few months this guy will be looking for a new pair of shoes when he posts a pic of the soles tearing off, and you can reply “we have a pair in stock, and they are 10% just for you!” This guy will come “running” to get them. More ways to interact coming tomorrow.
NOTE: Before we get into the post make sure to go to Twitter Analytics and set up analytics for your Twitter handle, it takes less than 2 minutes and will come in handy later on. It takes 24 hours to get set up, so it’s just better to do it as soon as possible. It will only give you data from after it is set up, so the earlier the better.
