So far we have discussed who to follow, who to tweet to, how often to tweet, and when to tweet. So now the biggest question of all! What should I tweet about?
First let’s talk about length of a tweet. Not too long ago, when someone wanted to retweet you they had to fit their comments in the space you allow in your tweet. So if your tweet is 100 characters long, they only have 40 characters to add on. That isn’t true anymore. Now, your tweet can use up the entire 140 characters and then they can comment with an additional 140 characters. So, while it used to make sense to attempt to limit your tweets to 95-100 characters that isn’t true anymore. Use as many characters as you need to get your message across, there is no correct amount. In fact, there are some people who will “Tweet Storm,” tweeting several times in a row and labeling them 1/5, 2/5, 3/5, etc. in order to get their message out, so there is no set rule for message length. There is a rumor going on now that claims that Twitter will remove this limit and allow up to 10,000 characters. If that happens it will definitely not matter how long your tweets are.
What about the content of the tweet?
If you are tweeting 10 times a day (while interacting 10s of times a day) with great content there is no reason you can’t try to sell once a day. Be relevant, interesting, entertaining, and educational. Not every tweet needs to be all of these, but if no tweets are, no one will want to read them.
Just because you’re a lobster house doesn’t mean every post needs to be about lobster. If it is mother’s day a post could just say “Happy #MothersDay to my mother, Pearl. Without her help I wouldn’t be anything. What are you doing to show you love your mom today?” See, great content, in the discussion, good call to action, just a nice post, and you aren’t even selling anything! So go out there and be social for once, I mean it is called SOCIAL media for a reason!
