Now that you know how to use Snapchat the question is how should you be using the platform. Snapchat is all about attention. A person can only watch a snap one time and a person cannot reread text that was sent to them. This means that a person needs to give their attention the first time or it’s gone forever. Even a story can only be seen for 24 hours, then it is gone forever.
Having this attention is what makes this platform so powerful. All that matters in attention, so the fact that this platform commands so much of each person, and has so many people using it means that it is a place to take seriously.
The first thing that is incredibly important to remember about Snapchat is that there are two pages, the individual snaps page, and the stories page. The stories page is overrun with hundreds of other stories and it is hard to demand attention there. But the individual snaps page is a much easier place to get people’s attention.
So, the trick is to send as many people’s individual snaps as possible. What’s interesting now, is that when you send out a snap to your story you are also able to send it as a personal snap to as many people as you want. I think that this feature will get overused very quickly (and may already be overused) and can really hurt the platform when it gets bigger. At the moment it is possible, so if you think certain people will enjoy a specific snap or type of snap then you can send out a blast to each person as an individual snap.
But, this is not how you should be using this feature. What you should do instead is reach out to people individually and message them either thanking them for following you, or asking to learn more about them (or both). Reaching out to people individually does a few things.
Firstly, it is much more likely that they will interact with you, which is the whole point of Snapchat. Second, they will remember your username, and then it is more likely that when they see you in the stories page they will open up your story and watch it. Lastly, you can learn something about them that might help you make better content for them and all of your followers.
Remember, the most important idea of Snapchat is to be human. There are no bots on Snapchat, so people expect you to be real. By being a real person and reaching out to say hi you can gain a lot more than a new follower, you can gain a new friend.
