Instagram was released on October 6, 2010. By that December that had over a million users on the platform. Fast forward to today, the app has over 400 million active monthly users. Most of us had never even heard of the platform when Facebook bought it in April 2012 for a $1 billion. Many people laughed when that happened, but no one is laughing now.
If your audience is on the younger side (15-30) then Instagram is definitely worth paying attention to. The reason is Instagram has the pluses of Facebook and the pluses of Twitter while giving them a new spin. You can’t post anything on Instagram without a photo, and that photo should be square (minimally 1080×1080 pixels). This is incredibly limiting, which makes people think twice before posting.
The type of people using Instagram are the ones who have been internet all their lives. They grew up on the internet, so they can easily see through a sales pitch and a sloppy job, so don’t get on Instagram if you are planning to do half a job.
We will get into the details of Instagram later on, but for now let’s make an account. The first things you need to do are choose a username (this should most likely match as closely to your other platforms), your name, your email address
(I assume this is used for two reasons:
- To email you things going on in the app so that you come back into the app
- To advertise to you, if someone targets your email address.)
A phone number (probably for advertising purposes), gender, bio, and website. This link is the only link you are able to tell your audience to click on. If you put a link in a post it is not clickable, so the only way to get people to come to your site is to change this link in your bio. Make sure all of this is filled out, because it is very likely that people will not follow if you don’t.
