The last thing I wanted to talk about is the psychology of replying to posts. We have spoken before about influencers, competitors, and customers. When you respond to a post with a ton of comments Instagram will only show the last three comments on the post. So if you are hoping to comment on a popular post to get people to respond that is a waste of time.
If you are hoping that competition will respond to you I find that unlikely. Also, trying to get people who follow your competitor to switch over to your company, doing it from a post of the competition is a bad idea, so you probably shouldn’t comment on your competitor’s posts either.
Besides those people their are your followers and your potential followers. When someone posts on Instagram, if they don’t follow you, don’t try and sell them anything, only be helpful! If someone is a stranger to you don’t come to their post to sell your product, talk about your company, or anything else. That is spam. By all means, favorite a post of theirs, follow them, or respond with a helpful or thoughtful response. If your brand uses a niche hashtag, which your customers use to post positive things about your company, if you honestly think that this person would want to know more then just use the hashtag, which will probably get them to click on it and see other posts about your business. DO NOT DO THIS EVERY TIME, only in specific cases.
For people that have been following you, if you have seen them post a lot about your brand then you can be slightly more salesman like, but even still you should not try to flat out sell from a comment, ask them if they want to switch to private message to discuss more if need be.
Besides these kinds of responses you could tag a person in a comment and then they will see it, but make sure you follow the rules we just spoke about. Stop trying to sell on the first date!
Bonus Tip:
We spoke in the past about auto-DMing for Twitter. At this point auto-DMing is so overused on Twitter that it is basically ruined. So many businesses message everyone that follows them that it caused most people to not even check their DMs.
This is not yet true for Instagram. I definitely don’t advise starting with auto-Direct messaging everyone on Instagram, but you can start by reaching out to a few followers simply thanking them for following you. Since this feature is new there is a good chance that people will read it, and possibly respond, so give it a try. If people aren’t happy about it, or they unfollow you because of it, then stop doing it!
